5 California Road Trip Stops All Ages Will Love
The Golden State is one of the largest and most diverse in the nation. It offers everything from exciting cities to beautiful beaches, soaring mountains, towering redwood trees and world-famous amusement parks. If you’re planning a road trip through California with your family, here are some of the top spots to take in.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park
Home to one of the largest forests of coast redwoods in the world, this region of Northern California not only offers a wealth of outdoor adventure, but the opportunity to drive your car right through one of the giant trees, something that’s sure to thrill the kids.
Glass Beach
Located at the north edge of Fort Bragg, Glass Beach is one of the state’s most colorful beaches. Made up of small, smooth pieces of sea glass, this site was once the home of the city dump. Over time, the pounding waves cleaned up the beach, breaking down everything but glass, resulting in those tiny pieces that cover it today.
San Francisco
This city offers a ton of fun things to do with kids of all ages. Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge while taking in the stunning views of the Pacific, Alcatraz and the city skyline. You can ride cable cars and take boat tours. Other options include driving down Lombard Street and visiting museums and gardens at Golden Gate Park.
Hearst Castle
While there are a few castles in the U.S. you will find one right on the central coast of California in San Simeon. Design and build for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, the 115-room main house is the setting for his extensive collection of European antiques and art pieces. Three daytime tours are available and advance reservations are recommended.
San Diego
With its neverending sunny climate, miles and miles of beautiful beaches and loads of attractions, San Diego is one of the top vacation destinations in the state. Play on the sand and in the water or visit Balboa Park, home to the San Diego Zoo, museums and a gorgeous rose garden.
